Feeling Blue
I stood along this street corner and photographed six blue cars that zoomed by one after the other. It was like seeing a parade or glitch in the matrix. I reflexively shot each one using a slow shutter speed until the rush ended with a white semi-truck sporting only a streak of blue.
Blue was why I stopped there in the first place. I was attracted to the scene by the cool winter sky combined with the blue striped roof, grey buildings, and grey asphalt. The white doors, windows, and crosswalk paint evenly highlighted the space. A subtle warmth emanated from the tree (seen below) as did the red bricks, crosswalk signs and car lights. These moody colors weaved themselves throughout the composition and evoked a sense of calm and cohesion with a hint of melancholy. I especially like the mint-green overhang that looks cartoonish and matches the frosty grass and light poles. Together they add depth and whimsy.
The image is one of reality but feels surreal, like a video game left on pause. There are just enough points of interest on this busy street corner to suggest a story to the viewer; one about an empty house with a front door that opens up into traffic.
